Misunderstanding and distrust–the predominant elements of a novel. Without them, everyone lives happily from beginning.

About This Quote

Once there lived a boy. He was the only child of the youngest daughter of a rich family. Everyone loved him, especially his father, who was very fond of him. The boy had everything that he could possibly wish for.

The only thing he didn’t have was someone who really loved him. The boy spent his childhood playing happily with other children in the neighborhood or in the woods, where they got lost and found one another again. After a while, however, he became very unhappy because he couldn’t play with his friends any longer.

They were all old enough to have found their own homes by now. But the boy remained at home with his father, who was always busy with projects, or at lessons given by his father, who was an enthusiastic teacher. The teacher thought that the most important thing in life was to teach his pupils things that would be useful for life.

The boy often went with his father to the schoolroom, where they spent hours working away on different assignments. But the more time passed, the more unhappy the boy grew. “Father is so busy nowadays!” he complained one day to his mother.

His mother tried to comfort him: “Oh, I am sure he will soon be free again to spend time with you!” But this consolation made things worse for him. He began to feel that there was no one who really cared about him and understood him anymore than his parents did—and that everyone else just treated him as an ordinary child of eleven years old just like any other boy of that age would be treated if he were not so special!
